120 miles northeast of Los Angeles near Ridgecrest, an earthquake struck that was 5.5 magnitude with rumblings felt across Southern California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The moderate shaking would have broken dishes and windows and overturned objects, but is not expected to cause major damage.

Seismologist Lucy Jones said that the earthquake was a large late aftershock from the Ridgecrest earthquakes on July 4 and 5.

Caltech seismologist Zachary Ross said that Wednesday’s quake was the largest aftershock of last summer’s earthquakes.

The Fourth of July earthquake was a magnitude 6.4, which happened to be a fore-shock to a magnitude 7.1 quake that hit on July 5.

The quake now is still considered an aftershock of last year’s quakes because the rate of seismic events per day “is still way above the rate it was” before the July quakes.

USGS seismologist Susan Hough said an aftershock of this magnitude will have its own aftershocks.

And that there’s a 1-in-20 chance a more powerful earthquake can strike in the next three days. In the last 10 days, there have been five earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
