An American civilian contractor was killed and several US troops wounded after a rocket attack on a coalition base in Kirkuk, Iraq, military officials said.

It’s reported that as many as 30 rockets were fired into the military base, and security forces were said to have found a launchpad for Katyusha rockets inside an abandoned vehicle near the base.

The rocket fire appears to have originated in Mosul where a US-led coalition is helping Iraqi forces battle remnants of the Islamic State group.

Some hard-line Iraqi militias loyal to Iran have recently threatened to carry out attacks against Americans in the country. The US maintains about 5,000 troops in Iraq.

This attack in Kirkuk is after several previous rocket attacks that have been targeting bases housing American forces in the last two months.

U.S. officials have warned Iran and its proxies to halt rocket attacks in the country.

In mid-December Secretary of Defense Mark Esper phoned Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi and asked for help to stop the rocket attacks.

And Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned Iran and its leaders in December of a “decisive U.S. response” if the regime or its militias harm American troops or allies in the region.

The U.S. has deployed roughly 14,000 additional troops to the Middle East over the last six months to respond to Iranian malign behavior.
