Hundreds of Arab Christians protested in anger in Israel over the display of a crucified Ronald McDonald, the fictitious company mascot of the McDonald’s fast-food restaurant chain.

The art work of the McDonald’s mascot on a crucifix in a pose like unto Jesus Christ is called ‘McJesus’ and was created by a European artist from Finland.

The blasphemous sculpture is a part of the “Sacred Goods” exhibit which is on display in the Haifa Museum.

The protests became violent with a molotov cocktail incendiary device thrown at the museum and with three police officers wounded by rocks thrown at them by protesters.

The art exhibit is said to also feature several other pieces featuring potentially offensive depictions of Jesus as well. The pastor of Haifa’s Saint Elijah Cathedral has condemned the exhibit in a statement.

One Reverend stated “We denounce the exhibition and the injury to the holiest symbol of Christianity by an institution that is supposed to serve citizens of all religions.”

He went on to say “What is suitable for Europe and the Christian population of Finland is not suitable for our community and cannot be met with understanding.”

Culture Minister Miri Regev wrote to the director general of Haifa Museums calling for the piece of art to be removed from display.

In the letter, Ms Regev said she had received “many complaints of serious offence caused to the Christian community’s feelings” because of the artwork.

Ms Regev said “contempt for symbols sacred to religions and many believers around the world as an act of artistic protest is illegitimate and cannot be displayed in a cultural institution supported by state funds”.

After the protests, the Haifa Museum only announced they would put a sign warning of potentially offensive content at the entrance to the exhibit.
