U.S. defense officials say they are worried about an insider attack or other threat from service members in the National Guard  involved in securing President-elect Joe Biden’s inauguration.

This has prompted the FBI to vet all of the 25,000 National Guard troops coming into Washington for the event.

The massive undertaking reflects the extraordinary security concerns that have gripped Washington DC following the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol.

And it underscores fears that some of the very people assigned to protect the city over the next several days could present a threat to the incoming president and other VIPs in attendance.

Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy told the media that officials are conscious of the potential threat, and he warned commanders to be on the lookout for any problems within their ranks as the inauguration approaches.

He also said Guard members are getting training on how to identify potential insider threats within their ranks.

About 25,000 members of the National Guard are streaming into Washington from across the country — at least two and a half times the number for previous inaugurals. And this time the huge number of troops are armed.

Twelve of the National Guard troops deployed to Washington ahead of the inauguration were flagged during the FBI background checks and have been sent home, according to Defense Department officials.

But scant details were offered as to what raised suspicions about them. Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman told reporters the plan has been to remove first and then ask questions later.

There’s no “handbook” for what pops a flag, Hoffman said, but troops are being pulled from duty, sent home and then investigated at the criminal or command level, according to the severity of the findings.

And there was no response to requests for details on what would flag a guardsman deployed for Capitol security, whether that was specific ties to extremism, documented threats against Capitol or inauguration security or political speech against Biden or supporting the outgoing president.
