Taiwan reports that China flew a dozen military jets into its airspace in an act of intimidation just days after Joe Biden became the US President.

Taipei says the incursion included eight nuclear-capable H-6K bombers, four J-16 fighter jets, and a Y-8 anti-submarine aircraft over the south-western corner of its air defense identification zone.

Taiwan’s air force said in response that “airborne alert sorties had been tasked, radio warnings issued and air defense missile systems deployed to monitor the activity.”

The presence of so many Chinese combat aircraft on a single mission in this location – is unusual. The exceptional flight by the Chinese bombers and fighters came just days after Joe Biden assumed the US presidency.

And the spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council said the US commitment to Taiwan was “rock-solid” after the island’s de facto ambassador in Washington, Hsiao Bi-khim, attended Biden’s swearing-in.

China’s Defense Ministry spokesman said that “military activities” in the Taiwan Straits “are necessary actions to address the current security situation” there.

And then he warned,  “Those who play with fire will burn themselves, and ‘Taiwan independence’ means war.”

Taiwan and China separated amid civil war in 1949 and China says it is determined to bring the island under its control by force if necessary.

The U.S. switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979, but is legally required to ensure Taiwan can defend itself and the self-governing democratic island enjoys strong bipartisan support in Washington.

The new Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a confirmation hearing, there is “no doubt” China poses the greatest threat of any nation to the U.S., and that the Trump administration was right to take a tougher stance against the Asian power.
