New satellite images have revealed vast swathes of the Arctic are suffering from “unprecedented” wildfires. It’s reported north of the Arctic circle, that high temperatures are facilitating enormous wildfires which could wreak ecological destruction.

And this comes after the world’s hottest June on record which has been followed by devastating heatwaves around the world including the US and Europe.

Satellite images have revealed fires across the arctic circle including Greenland, Siberia and Alaska, along with warm dry conditions following severe ice melt on the ice-sheets commencing earlier than average.

Satellite photography experts posted images showing smoke billowing across massive areas of uninhabited and wild land above the Arctic Circle. In Alaska, wildfires have already burned more than 1.6 million acres of land.

A senior scientist said Arctic Circle wildfires are now at unprecedented levels with the amount of CO2 emitted by Arctic wildfires as high as  fossil fuel CO2 emissions of some countries.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has described the fires in the northern hemisphere as “unprecedented” and warned of the enormous impact they are having on the CO2 levels of the earth.

They said the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service has tracked over 100 intense and long-lived wildfires in the Arctic Circle,” the WMO said in a statement.

They also said the latitude and intensity of these fires, as well as the length of time that they have been burning for, has been particularly unusual.

And that the ongoing Arctic fires have been most severe in Alaska and Siberia. Where in Alaska alone, they have registered almost 400 wildfires this year, with new ones igniting every day.

The WMO additionally said that the northern part of the world is warming faster than the planet as a whole. That heat is drying out forests and making them more susceptible to burn, to where the Earth’s forests are now burning at a rate unseen.
