The President, in a conference with U.S. governors, told them he is putting his top U.S. military general, Joint Chiefs Chairman Mark Milley, “in charge” of the response to the domestic protests that have violently spread in the cities of America.
The President’s press secretary said that the federal government would be deploying “additional federal assets.”
And that General Milley would play a role in a “central command center” to coordinate the responses on the local level.
She also said General Milley has advised the President of the effectiveness of the National Guard to ensure they are utilized to great effect across the country.
Saying that when there is an overwhelming National Guard presence, it actually deescalates the situation and causes less civil unrest.
Milley, as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, is the highest-ranking and senior-most military officer in the United States Armed Forces.
He is also the principal military advisor to the President, the National Security Council, the Homeland Security Council, and the Secretary of Defense.
The Joint Chiefs Chairman was recently seen walking near the police line in Lafayette Park at the White House with military vehicles stationed nearby.
Also, several truckloads of National Guard military police have arrived near the White House where large groups of protesters have fought with police for the past three nights.
A U.S. official said the National Guard troops are going to be protecting the White House and national monuments.
In a dramatic escalation of the national crisis of violence, the President announced today in a White House speech that he was mobilizing a heavily armed military into the streets to stop the violence that has gripped America’s streets for days.
