The states of Florida and Texas are imposing quarantines on air travelers from the states of New York and Louisiana. As those states have developed serious coronavirus outbreaks as hot-spots in the U.S.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis said in a news conference that anyone flying from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut to Florida will be placed under a mandatory 14-day quarantine.

DeSantis said, “Today there are over 190 direct flights from the New York City area to Florida. I would reckon given the outbreak there that every single flight has someone on it that is positive for COVID-19, and so we’re working to stop it in the state of Florida.”

DeSantis also said that since the federal government had not put any domestic travel restrictions into place, Florida would take the initiative.

Governor DeSantis said local law enforcement, state law enforcement, and health officials will meet travelers on their flights from New York, Connecticut and New Jersey to conduct temperature checks.

Also anyone who violates the order could face a misdemeanor charge and if found guilty of the charge could face prison time and/or pay a fine.

Governor Greg Abbott of Texas also unveiled an executive order requiring visitors flying to Texas from New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and New Orleans to self-quarantine for 14 days during the coronavirus pandemic.

Upon arrival to Texas, a visitor from those states will fill out a form designating a self-quarantine location such as a hotel or residence, Abbott said.

The order will be enforced by the Texas Department of Public Safety, whose state troopers will make visits to the location to make sure the person is complying.

If those people fail to follow the executive order, it can result in a fine of up to $1,000 or 180 days in jail, or both, Abbott said.
