A severe 7.4 magnitude earthquake happened at a depth of about 21 miles with the epicenter about 11 miles south-southwest of Hualien City in Taiwan according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
As Taiwan was shaken by its most powerful earthquake in a quarter century as the major trembler has killed at least nine people, injured a thousand more, collapsed hundreds of buildings, and triggered tsunami warnings across the region.
Additionally, some 143 people, many of them tourists in badly-damaged hotels, are feared trapped in the ruins, according to the Taiwan National Fire Agency. And rescue efforts were underway to free 71 workers trapped in two rock quarries in the hardest-hit Hualien region.
There were also reports that multiple people were trapped in eight collapsed tunnels in and around Hualien City, about 70 miles southeast of the Taiwanese capital Taipei.
And authorities have still not been able to reach at least 50 people who were riding in mini-buses through Taroko National Park when the quake struck and knocked out local phone networks.
This was the strongest earthquake to hit Taiwan since 1999, when a 7.6 magnitude tremor killed about 2,400 people, said the director of Taiwan’s Seismological Center.
Taiwanese fire officials warned that the death toll could rise in the coming days.
Taiwan’s President said a disaster response center had been set up and that the National Army would provide support to local governments. The President also warned her constituents to be wary of aftershocks.
More than 87,000 households had their power knocked out by the quake and the subsequent series of aftershocks, the biggest of which measured 6.5, according to Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration.
The earthquake was felt in all parts of Taiwan, the Central News Agency reported. Metro systems in Taipei, the capital, as well as the cities of Taichung and Kaohsiung, were suspended before mostly resuming.
Tremors were also reported elsewhere in the region, including Fujian, a province on China’s southeast coast that sits across from Taiwan and in cities in other parts of China including Shanghai and Hangzhou.
The Biblical prophecies (Matthew 24, Luke 21, Revelation 6) foretell that there will be earthquakes in the Last Days signaling the world is nearing the end of this age and the coming of Jesus Christ.
These events and conditions happening now are warning signs pointing to the nearing fulfillment of the Last Days prophecies at the end of this age revealing it’s time to prepare now for the nearing appearance of Jesus Christ for His Church by being born again spiritually into the Kingdom of God as Jesus said we must (John 3:3-5) and His Apostles who were authorized (Matthew 16:19) described how (Acts 2).
