More than 1,000 aftershocks have shaken Alaska since the magnitude 7.0 earthquake that rocked the state, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The aftershocks of the 7.0 magnitude quake that hit Southcentral Alaska, while nowhere near as powerful as the initial earthquake, were strong enough to compete with initial quakes on any ordinary day.

A 4.5 hit 5 miles from Big Lake just before midnight on Friday, and a 5.2 struck 10 miles from Anchorage 3 hours before that. A magnitude 4.0 quake hit about 10 miles southwest of Big Lake at around 5 a.m. Saturday morning.

While the majority of the aftershocks were measured at magnitude 2.5 or less, about 350 small earthquakes were higher than 2.5 and around a dozen registered higher than magnitude 4.5.

The original quake’s epicenter was about eight miles north of downtown Anchorage and caused structural damage to buildings and buckled roadways. Fortunately, no deaths or injuries were caused by the quake.

State seismologist Mike West called the massive tremor the “most significant” to rock Alaska since the one in 1964, the Anchorage Daily News reported.

The 1964 earthquake was the most powerful quake recorded in U.S. history and the second most powerful recorded on Earth at magnitude 9.2.

One resident said, “It just didn’t stop. It kept going and got louder and louder, and things just fell everywhere — everything off my dressers, off my bookcases, my kitchen cupboard. Just broken glass everywhere.”

And another resident said, “It was very loud when it came, it was very clear that this was something bigger than what we normally experience. We live in earthquake country … but this was a big one.”
