A severe winter storm is about to blast a wide swathe of the U.S. with a crippling ice storm with icy roads and power outages amid dangerously cold temperatures.
The 2,000 mile-wide storm stretching from the Rockies to New England will put more than 90 million people under winter weather alerts.
Parts of the Midwest could see over a foot of snow with it potentially the biggest snow in a century for some areas and there is expected a big impact in the South where a crippling ice storm is likely.
Meteorologists say that heavy snow will begin in the Rockies and then spread across the Midwest where there will actually be two rounds of winter weather.
And if snow totals stack up the way they say models are suggesting there will be a historic snowstorm with some towns looking at their biggest snowfall in 100 years.
The storm will push deep into the south where there could be dangerous wind chills as low as 5 below zero that are forecast in places not use to such weather and ill-prepared.
The areas expecting such weather are already announcing that schools will be closed toward the end of this week and warning that travel will be disrupted by the crippling storm.
Across the Northeast and New England, millions are still digging out from a winter storm less than a week ago, and this new storm will be another hit for them bringing another shot of cold air to the region and keeping all that snow on the ground even longer.
