A strong earthquake has rocked Hawaii in the night striking near the active Kilauea volcano which caused devastation across the Big Island of Hawaii last year.

The magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck the south flank of Kīlauea Volcano on Hawaii Island at 12:55 a.m. with the earthquake occurring at a depth of 6.3 km. It was felt all across the Big Island.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center, which said the earthquake struck “in the Hilina region of Kīlauea Volcano,” reported that no tsunami is expected after the event. “However, some areas may have experienced strong shaking,” the PTWC said.

According to USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory seismic network “We see no detectable changes in volcanic activity at the summit or along the rift zones of Kīlauea as a result of this earthquake. Aftershocks are possible and could be felt.” HVO continues to monitor Kīlauea and other Hawaiian volcanoes for any changes.

One local tweeted: “Just felt a huge earthquake on east shore of Big Island. Shook for a good 10-15 seconds.” Another wrote: “Felt a big QUAKE here at 12:57am.. Woke us outta sleep..Bed was just rockin & Rollin!”

Hawaii’s Civil Defense said no tsunami was expected because the earthquake “was not large enough”. But they added: “Be aware of the possibility of aftershocks.”

Just last year, neighborhoods near Kilauea were evacuated due to volcanic eruptions and earthquakes causing dangerous fissures releasing gases. Many homes were destroyed by lava flows exacerbated by earthquakes with thousands of people evacuated.
