The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said this week that Islamic State militants in Syria have executed nearly 700 prisoners in the past two month in eastern Syria.

The UK-based war monitoring group said the prisoners were among 1,350 civilians and fighters that Islamic State had been holding in territory along Syria’s Euphrates River.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), led by the Kurdish YPG militia, has been battling ISIS there in hot battles for the past few months with the help of U.S. air power, special forces, and marines.

The SDF commander-in-chief Mazloum Kobani said last week that at least 5,000 IS fighters remain holed up around the town of Hajinin, including many foreign fighters who appear ready to fight to the death.

The mass murder of captives in Syria by ISIS comes as more than 200 mass graves containing the remains of thousands of people have been discovered in Iraq in areas formerly under the control of Islamic State (ISIS) militants according to the United Nations.

This is all happening as U.S. President Trump suddenly declared victory over ISIS and the withdrawal of US troops from Syria. But military officials are warning that such a move now would open up Syria for a strengthening of ISIS.
