A 6.4 magnitude earthquake has struck Northern California the US Geological Survey said leaving at least two people dead and others injured.
Reports say that roads and homes have been damaged and tens of thousands are left without electricity. And the Governor of California has declared a state of emergency for the affected area.
The epicenter of the quake was at Fortuna, a city of about 12,000 people in Humboldt County, part of California’s forested Redwood Coast.
The Humboldt County sheriff’s office said there is widespread damages to roads and homes and that homes and businesses were without power with nearly 70,000 outages reported.
At least two people are dead as a result of medical emergencies from the earthquake with another eleven injured according to the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.
More than three dozen smaller quakes — as powerful as a 4.6 magnitude — have struck the area after the main earthquake. Today’s temblor comes a year after a 6.2 magnitude quake struck just off Humboldt County’s Cape Mendocino on December 20, 2021.
In this earthquake officials said that a bridge was damaged and closed along with several roads also damaged. Also at least one building caught on fire and there were homes “knocked off their foundations” or partially collapsed.
Residents were also being displaced from damaged homes and officials were working on restoring electric and water utilities as local residents were placed under a boil water advisory.
The regional American Red Cross has established an overnight shelter for community members displaced by the earthquake.
One resident said the earthquake was not like anything they had ever experienced: “I was screaming,” she said. “The way that it shook … I’ve never felt anything like that in my life.”
“It felt like north and south rocked back and forth, and it kept getting bigger and bigger. I heard banging, things crashing and glass shattering,” said the resident who lives in an apartment off the freeway near the Pacific Ocean.
