A 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit the Philippines in Davao that collapsed buildings as the death toll rose to five as rescue personnel retrieve bodies and search for survivors.

The latest fatalities were taken out from the concrete rubble of the Southern Trade commercial center and the number of people still trapped is unknown as of yet but authorities believed there could be more.

Army troops, police, firefighters and volunteers, armed with sound and motion detectors, have located more bodies but could not immediately extricate the remains pinned in slabs of cement.

A child died after being hit by a collapsed wall in her house and a woman in her 70s died from a heart attack during this earthquake in a region that has been battered by three deadly earthquakes in recent months.

Officials said 84 people were also injured in the strong quake where a city and four towns near the quake’s epicenter were still without power and classes were canceled in a broad area to give time for inspections of school buildings.

Aftershocks were being felt in the area every 30 minutes, after the earthquake collapsed buildings as homes and commercial centers while also damaging hospitals and churches.

Two strong aftershocks of magnitude 5 and 5.7 centered north of General Santos City were recorded after the main tremor.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology recorded the earthquake’s epicenter as 9 kilometers northwest of Matanao, Davao del Sur.

Regional disaster official Christopher Tan said, “It’s very distressing. There’s a very slim chance of finding survivors.”

And Gov. Douglas Cagas of Davao del Sur appealed, “Please pray for us.”
