The US Geological Survey says a 7.0 magnitude earthquake, initially recorded at 7.3 but then adjusted, struck Papua New Guinea with the quake at a depth of 52 miles and about 11 miles off Wau.
Wau is an inland former gold mining town with a population of about 5,000, about 93 miles south-west of Papua New Guinea’s second-largest city, Lae.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a tsunami warning for “hazardous tsunami waves” but said about an hour later the danger had passed.
The shockwaves from the massive quake were felt as far away as northern Australia.
Resident’s in Papua New Guinea’s capital Port Moresby, which is around 115 miles from where the quake struck, said homes had been damaged and there were fears buildings would collapse during “violent” shaking.
Another Port Moresby resident said: “I thought the buildings were going to fall, everything shook.”
One witness said: “It was like never before. Everyone in all the buildings here at downtown rushed out of their offices here at downtown and out in the streets.
The Biblical Prophecies of Jesus (Matthew 24, Luke 21) foretell that earthquakes will be a sign indicating the nearing of the end of this age.
These events and conditions happening now are warning signs pointing to the nearing fulfillment of the Last Days prophecies at the end of this age revealing it’s time to prepare now for the nearing appearance of Jesus Christ for His Church by being born again spiritually into the Kingdom of God as Jesus said we must (John 3) and His Apostles who were authorized (Matthew 16:19) described how (Acts 2).
