Seven earthquakes have happened centered in Wichita which is near a major fault system that runs through the center of North America.

All seven of the earthquakes centered in Wichita in 2020 occurred during the past two weeks, with two of them coming hours apart. All were relatively in the same area in east Wichita, according to the Kansas Geological Survey.

Wichita is just west of a “major fault system” known as the Nemaha Ridge or the Humboldt Fault that runs through the center of North America, according to Wichita State University’s geology department.

The rapid series of quakes, measuring between 2.2 up to 3.5 magnitude, have caused concern and lots of questions as some wonder what is behind earthquakes in Wichita and if it is a sign of something more ominous to come.

One scientist acknowledged that there is a high concern level over the series of earthquakes and that he’s had to field lots of questions, but is a skeptic about it meaning anything else significant is coming.

Saying that a lot of the concern is “based on bits and pieces of knowledge, and bits and pieces of folklore and bits and pieces of conspiracy.” And some say its just the result of fracking, a process used to extract oil or gas.

But Wichita State University’s geology department says that fracking is not causing earthquakes to happen in Wichita, Kansas.

Kansas Corporation Commission spokesperson Linda Berry said the organization has been investigating the string of earthquakes in Wichita but has “no conclusive evidence at this point.”
