More than 100 million Americans are in the path of a dangerous heat wave, from the West to the Northeast, according to officials.
The National Weather Service has forecast temperatures in the triple digits will be recorded from Arizona to Louisiana.
Forecasters warned the roughly one-third of Americans that were under heat alerts to drink fluids and stay out of the sun, saying that excessive heat could cause them to develop heat-related illnesses.
Saying that the scorching heat will remain a major weather story over at least the next few days with even the low temperatures of the day remaining warm in the 80s.
The heat has been especially sweltering in central California, the Southwest, the Plains, the mid-Atlantic and the Northeast, which have been under excessive heat warnings and heat advisories.
And the conditions threaten to fan the patchwork of 86 fires burning across the U.S. according to the National Interagency Fire Center.
Officials across the country have opened cooling centers to keep residents out of the sun as they declare heat emergencies and activate extreme hot weather protocols while warning residents to stay indoors because of the heat and humidity.
In Oklahoma, a high of 116 degrees was recorded at two places in the state and the lowest high temperature on Tuesday in the entire state was 106 degrees.
Also in Dallas, Texas, the temperature reached 109 degrees on Tuesday, breaking the 2018 record of 108 degrees. And more record-setting triple digit temperatures are forecast across Texas.
Last year was one of the hottest on record, according to federal agencies, which also reported that the U.S. recorded its hottest summer last year since 1936.
As temperatures are rising around the world causing record heat waves, droughts and wildfires.
