For the first time in the Gaza war, a drone strike slipped through Israel’s vaunted air defenses exploding in Tel Aviv Israel’s commercial capital.
A video shared by the Israeli military appeared to show a small aircraft hurtling toward a building near the Tel Aviv beach followed by a flash of light and a loud explosion.
Emergency services said one person was killed and several people were injured by the blast, which hit an apartment building near the U.S. Embassy’s branch office in the city.
Israeli and US officials say that the drones were fired from Yemen roughly 1,250 miles away where they were launched by the Arab Houthi militant army backed by Iran.
The Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack, saying they had targeted Tel Aviv with a new drone they called “Yaffa” which they said can evade Israeli air-defense systems.
The drone strike marks an advance in the Islamic Arab militant group’s capabilities and threatens to widen what is already a multi-front war against Israel.
The fact the drone got through highlights Israel’s difficulties defending against such drones, a relatively cheap means of attack that is frustrating militaries around the world.
Drones, which are relatively cheap, accessible, easy to operate and difficult to detect, are becoming an important tool in the hands of militant groups fighting more advanced militaries.
The Houthis have previously fired missiles at Israel with a focus on the city of Eilat in southern Israel. They have also fired dozens of UAVs at Israel since the start of the war. Most of them were intercepted by the Israeli air force or the U.S. before reaching Israeli territory.
But now they have sent a message to Israel and the United States that Houthi capabilities can impact Israel, the U.S., and global operations not just in the Red Sea but also inside Israel.
Where now for the first time they have reached deeper into Israel to successfully hit Tel Aviv.
