U.S. media are reporting that the United States fired a barrage of missiles into Syria tonight, in retaliation for a gruesome chemical weapons attack blamed on President Bashar al-Assad’s forces that killed about 100 civilians.
It is the first direct U.S. assault on Syrian government forces. According to the reports, more than 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles were launched from U.S. Navy destroyers in the Mediterranean. They are said to have targeted an air base in western Syria, in retaliation for the chemical weapons attack that American officials 
believe Syrian government aircraft launched with a nerve gas.
The surprise strike marked a striking reversal for Trump, who appeared moved by the video and photos of children killed in that chemical attack, calling it a “disgrace to humanity” that crossed “a lot of lines.”
Previously, the U.S. ambassador to the U.N., while holding photographs of dead Syrian children after a chemical bomb attack, gave an ominous warning that her country might take unilateral action if the Security Council failed to respond to the latest atrocity in the Syria war. 
The ambassador, Nikki Haley, also used her remarks at an emergency session to blame Russia for being culpable as well for supporting and protecting the Assad regime. Ms. Haley said, “Time and time again, Russia uses the same false narrative to deflect attention from their allies in Damascus,… How many more children have to die before Russia cares?”
She closed her remarks with an ominous warning. “When the United Nations consistently fails in its duty to act collectively, there are times in the life of states that we are compelled to take our own action,” she said.
Tonight President Donald Trump told reporters at his presidential retreat in southern Florida that he ordered the strike, saying it was in the “vital national security interest” of the United States. He also called on all civilized nations to join the U.S. “in seeking an end to the slaughter and bloodshed in Syria.”
Doctors have showed that victims’ of the chemical weapons attack had clear signs of sarin gas poisoning. One doctor was quoted as saying, “It’s quite possible that Assad and Putin are using this … as a kind of experiment to test out new combinations of lethal chemical weapons.”
War crime atrocities have been consistently occurring throughout Syria in the conflict with the targeting of civilians, attacks on hospitals, and use of chemical weapons, by the Syrian government of Assad supported by Putin of Russia.
This now raises the real possibility of counter-strikes by Russia against U.S. assets in the region and also the consideration for potential of Russian personnel and equipment to be inadvertently hit in a U.S. strike as well, since Russia has military bases in Syria.
