The beating drums of rumors of war have become louder, as the U.S. envoy to NATO said today that the U.S. could move to strike and destroy Russian nuclear-capable cruise missiles with military force, if they don’t stop building them.

According to Reuters, US ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison said Russia must halt its covert development of a banned cruise missile system or the United States will seek to destroy it before it becomes operational saying the new weapons violate the Intermediate Nuclear Forces treaty of 1987.

The 1987 Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty bans medium-range missiles capable of hitting Europe or Alaska.

U.S. ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchison said Washington remained committed to a diplomatic solution but was prepared to consider a military strike if development of the medium-range system continued.

“At that point, we would be looking at the capability to take out a (Russian) missile that could hit any of our countries,” Hutchison told a news conference. “Counter measures (by the United States) would be to take out the missiles that are in development by Russia in violation of the treaty,” she added. “They are on notice.”

Overall, the tone of the original statements by Hutchison seemed to be warning Russia of the perception by the U.S. the weapons system in question presented a clear and present danger that if it becomes operational would warrant a military strike against it, which is quite ominous.

However, later in a tweet it seemed Hutchison did somewhat of a walk back with a clarification saying she was not talking about a preemptive strike against Russia. “My point: Russia needs to return to INF Treaty compliance or we will need to match its capabilities to protect US & NATO interests. The current situation, with Russia in blatant violation, is untenable.”

But the Russian Foreign Ministry said that such statements were dangerous, and that it would provide detailed answers to Washington.

At a minimum, the incident does buttress the Bible prophecy “that in the last days perilous times will come.” No doubt we are there, when even a tweet can be what stands between the world and war.
