Israel has been suffering a drought including five dry years in a row, causing the worst drought in 40 years.
It became so bad that in 2018 Agriculture Minister Uri Ariel called for a special prayer session, where Rabbis and thousands of Jews gathered at the Western Wall and prayed to God for rain to come and end the drought.
Now the prayers for rain have been answered as the heavens over Israel opened up bringing much needed rain to Israel.
The rains continued steadily for two days, and the heavy rains were accompanied by falling temperatures. Most of the rain fell in the north, revitalizing the Sea of Galilee (Kinneret) the main source of Israel’s drinking water. The level of the Kinneret was recorded at 214.24 meters, up 22cm or 8.66 inches.
In addition to rain, the north of Israel was blessed with snow. Mount Hermon reported snow with levels five feet at the summit and four feet on the lower slopes.
Even more rain is expected to arrive, blown in from the Mediterranean to Israel’s shores. Precipitation is expected to fall in all regions including the Negev.
The divine significance of the rain was not lost on the Rabbis who see the rain in Israel as a reflection of answered prayer and the relationship between the Jews and their God of Israel.
