The pro-European Union (EU) Dutch political establishment was stunned when an anti-EU far-right populist party was the shocking big winner in provincial elections in the Netherlands.

The party called “Forum for Democracy” won the largest number of votes throughout the Netherlands, and the election results will see Mark Rutte, the Prime Minister of the Netherlands for almost a decade now, lose his Senate majority.

His current ruling coalition of four parties, in power since 2017, is down to 31 out of a total of 75 Senate seats, and will now need the support of a fifth partner to be able to pass legislation.

The Forum for Democracy Party was founded in 2016 by its leader Thierry Baudet and it advocates “Nexit” – the Netherlands’ exit from the EU, like Britain’s Brexit.

The election win of Baudet and his Forum for Democracy came just days after a terrorist attack in the Dutch city of Utrecht, in which a man originally from Turkey killed 3 people and wounded 6 others after opening fire inside a tram.

And all this is happening just two months before the 2019 EU parliament elections.

This has stunned the political establishment in the Netherlands and also sent shock waves across the European Union after the election victory for a party which campaigns for a Dutch exit from the EU.

This has the potential to plunge the Netherlands and EU leadership into further crisis, just as the EU in Brussels is struggling with more deadlock over Brexit in Britain.
