People are suffering from record breaking heat, and fires are burning out of control, and air pollution has become so bad from increasing smoke that people cover their faces when outside.
Where is it? You may would think India? … or perhaps China?
But no, it’s Alaska! The farthest northern state of the U.S. and in the Arctic Circle, is record breaking hot and on fire with wildfires.
Record-smashing heat is literally melting Alaska.
The U.S. state on the Arctic Ocean is suffering a record-breaking heatwave across the state, as wildfires are spreading and causing the first ever in history dense smoke advisory in the state, while melting ice is also threatening to submerge towns.
Its reported, Anchorage, the biggest city of Alaska and home to about 40 percent of Alaskans, was hitting a new record level of temperatures in the 80’s according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
But then Anchorage this week saw the mercury soar up to 90 degrees Fahrenheit shattering the city’s all-time record-high temperature by 5 degrees hitting 90 degrees for the first time ever on record. And Juneau, the capital of Alaska, registered three days with highs in the 80s, breaking a 110-year-old record held since 1909.
In a state with a history known to not need air-conditioning, temperatures inside homes have skyrocketed to levels not usually found in Alaska, with people leaving doors and windows open with fans running.
But additionally, Anchorage was also issued its first ever dense smoke advisory from the wildfires, according to AccuWeather. And the National Weather Service said that areas around Anchorage were under the advisory with smoke reducing visibility to a quarter mile or less.
The advisory warned, “A dense smoke advisory means widespread fires will create smoke, limiting visibility. If driving, slow down, use your headlights, and leave plenty of distance ahead of you in case a sudden stop is needed.”
It also said, “persons with respiratory problems may have difficulty breathing when outside.”
The Anchorage Daily News reported the wildfire near Anchorage brought extremely smoky skies to the city to where people walked through midtown Anchorage covering their faces with their shirts.
And the Daily News headline was that more record-breaking heat and wildfire smoke was forecast for the Fourth of July holiday. Then the Anchorage Fire Department canceled all Fourth of July fireworks due to “extreme dry weather conditions.”
According to the Alaska Incident Information System, the wildfires continued to burn over the recent hot and dry days pushing at the existing fire lines. And one fire, the Swan Lake Fire, has burned up an area spanning 70,330 acres, and there are 467 personnel working to control the one fire. But the fire is only 15% controlled after nearly a month of burning.
State and federal fire managers said across Alaska, there were 354 wildfires burning across 443,211 acres, as reported by Reuters.
Alaska climate specialist Rick Thorman said the average temperatures in June across Alaska broke many of the national averages according to data from the Alaska Center for Climate Assessment and Policy.
To the north, in Fairbanks, fire officials also ordered evacuations in areas and told more residents to be prepared to leave because of another wildfire there which continued to grow to thousands of acres.
Also, iconic places in Alaska as the Denali National Park and the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge had active wild fires burning from record heat in most of the state creating flammable conditions from the Canadian border to the Bering Sea coast.
Rick Thorman, the climatologist with the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, also said that the northern Bering and southern Chukchi seas are “baking.” And the last five years have produced the warmest sea-surface temperatures on record in the region, contributing to record low sea-ice levels.
The rising temperatures have also had environmental impacts, causing birds and marine animals to wash up on coastlines. And the ice disappeared far earlier than normal this year causing alarm among coastal residents who rely on wildlife and fish.
In Alaska, ice has always been infrastructure in the past. But the Smithsonian reports that the record-breaking heat in Alaska is wreaking havoc on communities and the ecosystem.
In addition to temperatures promoting wildfires, the persisting warm temperatures throughout the year have also caused ice to melt, threatening towns as the water levels continue to rise.
Along the state’s northern coast, melting sea ice is the main worry because of the extremely warm ocean temperatures since unusual springtime heat along the north coast melted the sea ice.
To where abnormally high temperatures have led to unsafe travel conditions, uncertain ecological futures and even multiple deaths. They also report the United States Government has identified at least 31 Alaskan communities that are at risk with some who must relocate soon or cease to exist.
The Biblical prophecies (Luke 21, Revelation 16) foretell how the weather cycles of earth will intensify until humankind is affected with great heat as a sign of the Last Days prophecies indicating the coming end of the age.
These are signs of the Last Days revealing its time to prepare for the nearing appearance of Jesus Christ by being born again spiritually into the Kingdom of God as Jesus said we must (John 3) and His Apostles (Matthew 16:19) who were authorized described how (Acts 2).
This new birth experience brings peace and joy in the Holy Spirit now in this life, and eternal life in the world to come. As we are saved from the wrath of the plagues of Revelation prophecy that comes upon the world of disobedience as we are appointed instead to salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
