The Ebola virus has spread to a city of two million people in the Congo, near the border with Rwanda, that is called a gateway to the region and the world. The chief of the World Health Organization said this is a potential game changer.

The first case of Ebola was discovered in Goma, a city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, that could be a “game-changer” in the fight against the spread of the deadly virus, according to health officials.

A pastor who arrived in the city on a Sunday, having traveled south by bus from Butembo, 186 miles away, tested positive for Ebola at a treatment center.

Congolese authorities in Goma were tracking down the other bus passengers who rode with the pastor who became the first confirmed case in the regional capital. WHO’s Ebola response team said it had found the two buses the man took before he reached Goma.

Health officials have feared since the beginning of the outbreak that cases could emerge in Goma. There are fears the disease could spread rapidly in the densely populated area and onwards to neighboring countries.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), spoke at a “high-level event” in the DRC and said: “The identification of the case in Goma could potentially be a game-changer in this epidemic. Goma is a city of two million people, near the border with Rwanda, and is a gateway to the region and the world.”

Dr Harouna Djingarey, infectious disease program manager for the WHO’s regional office in eastern DRC, said of Goma “It’s the door of this region to the rest of the world. From here, you can fly to go to everywhere in the world. If we don’t have the control over the contacts, some high-risk contacts may fly, take a plane and go somewhere.”

The WHO emergency committee has been ordered to reconvene to assess the threat, in light of the latest development. The DRC Ebola outbreak, which started last year, has killed 1,665 people so far.

Ebola causes diarrhea, vomiting and hemorrhagic fever and can be spread through bodily fluids. An epidemic between 2013 and 2016 killed more than 11,300 people in West Africa.

The Biblical Prophecies (Matthew 24, Revelation 6) foretell that pestilence is a sign of the Last Days revealing we are nearing the end of this age and the coming of Jesus Christ.

As those Biblically born again into the Kingdom of God are saved from the wrath in the tribulation of Revelation prophecy that comes upon the world of disobedience as we are appointed instead to salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.
