In the past two weeks, the U.S. Geological Survey has recorded 20 earthquakes along the New Madrid fault line.
It was reported the latest quake was located about 2 miles east-northeast of Ridgely, Tennessee, and 33 miles east of Kennett, Missouri, at a depth of 3.5 miles.
It was the 20th earthquake in two weeks recorded along the New Madrid seismic zone, which the USGS calls the “most seismically active in North America east of the Rockies.”
While not as well known as faults in California or Alaska, the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ), located in southeastern Missouri, northeastern Arkansas, western Tennessee, western Kentucky and southern Illinois, is the most active seismic area in the United States, east of the Rocky Mountains.
And the area includes major cities: such as Memphis, Tennessee; St. Louis, Missouri; Little Rock, Arkansas; and Evansville, Indiana.
The NMSZ is famous for a series of three major earthquakes (believed to have been larger than magnitude 7.0) which occurred in the winter period between Dec. 16, 1811, and Feb. 7, 1812.
But additionally, hundreds of moderate to severe earthquakes (magnitude 5.0 to 6.5) and thousands of smaller (magnitude 5.0 to 4.0) earthquakes occurred in between the larger earthquakes and continued shaking the area for several months.
The large earthquakes rattled the entire eastern half of the U.S. with people feeling the shaking over a million square miles.
It’s reported to have shook Dolly Madison out of bed and startled President Madison in the White House 900 miles away while ringing church bells in Boston 1300 miles away.
Modern seismologists estimate the 1812 New Madrid earthquake at 7.5 to 8.0 magnitude, though some say it could have rated as much as 8.8.
It’s recognized as the strongest earthquake ever to strike east of the Mississippi River, where the great quake caused the mighty river to run backwards.
But the Feb. 7 earthquake was just the climax of a series of significant quakes and constant minor rumblings that had shaken mid-America since December 1811.
And the New Madrid fault network is reminding us its still active, as it’s constant rumblings are still being recorded by the seismologists.
As the question is not if a severe earthquake will again hit the more than half dozen states in mid-America that border the great Mississippi River, but rather when it will happen and how devastating it will be.
The Biblical Prophecies (Matthew 24, Luke 21) foretell that earthquakes are a sign of the Last Days revealing we are nearing the end of this age and the appearance of Jesus Christ.
These events and conditions happening now are signs pointing to the nearing fulfillment of the Last Days prophecies at the end of this age revealing it’s time to prepare for the nearing appearance of Jesus Christ for His Church by being born again spiritually into the Kingdom of God as Jesus said we must (John 3) and His Apostles who were authorized (Matthew 16:19) described how (Acts 2).
Preparing those Biblically born again into the Kingdom of God to be ready to escape all the things that will come to pass, in the wrath of the tribulation of Revelation prophecy, that comes upon the world of disobedience. As the born again Church is not appointed unto wrath (1 Thessalonians 1:10) but instead to salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ.
