A drug used to treat Ebola has shown  clear-cut positive data in trials of the drug for severe Covid-19 patients.

Drug manufacturer Gilead Sciences said results from their trial of remdesivir against severe Covid-19 showed improved symptoms in patients who were given the drug both early and late in treatment.

The hopeful signs from two separate trials of the drug remdesivir against Covid-19 prompted calls for the treatment to receive emergency use authorization from the Food & Drug Administration.

Dr Anthony Fauci, the US government’s top infectious disease expert, said “The data shows remdesivir has a clear-cut, significant, positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery.”

The United States has just reached over 1 million confirmed cases of coronavirus with the highest number of total cases and deaths in the world.

The results prove “that a drug can block this virus,” he said, adding “We think it’s really opening the door to the fact that we now have the capability of treating [Covid-19].”

Former Food and Drug Administration commissioner Dr Scott Gottlieb said the new data should push the drug over the line to emergency use authorization to treat coronavirus.
