Bubonic plague was discovered by authorities in the northern Chinese area of Inner Mongolia with them warning residents of the potential for spread of the disease.

According to reports, one patient is a herdsman and is in quarantine. Also, a 15-year-old with a high fever is also feared to have contracted the disease after coming into contact with a marmot that had been killed by a dog.

The government responded with a level three warning issued for epidemic control where they have detected 1-20 cases of an infectious disease.

Considering China is still recovering from a devastating battle with coronavirus, the fear of another virus outbreak sparked major concerns.

However, experts are claiming that the bubonic plague, which infects wild rodents and spreads by infected fleas, should not be a major outbreak since it is now deemed as treatable.

However, the alert will prohibit the hunting and eating of animals that could carry the disease and also advises citizens to avoid camping and coming in close contact with wild animals.

This is the first case of a bubonic plague diagnosis since four cases of previous plagues were reported in November 2019 which two were the deadly pneumonic plague.

The bubonic plague was known as the “Black Death” in the Middle Ages, which then was one of the most fatal diseases in history and responsible for killing roughly 25 million people in the 14th-century.
