New York City is setting up quarantine checkpoints at key entry points to the city to screen travelers coming from more than 30 states with coronavirus outbreaks.

Along main bridges and tunnels to the city checkpoints will be setup, where travelers will be told they must quarantine.

Then the city will follow up on the people from their information taken at the checkpoints, through calls and text messages, and if they can’t get them on the phone, they deploy search teams knocking on their door.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued the travel advisory in late June, ordering travelers from states with a significant Covid-19 spread to self-quarantine for 14 days.

New York had previously stationed enforcement teams from the the state’s Department of Health at the city’s major airports to ensure compliance with the advisory. Where all passengers from incoming flights from states on the advisory are required to fill out a traveler form.

Now New York City through their test & trace corp public health initiative is also following through in implementing a program at more entry points for quarantining and checking people.

The New York City Sheriff’s Office, which operates under the Department of Finance and is working in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, is managing the traveler registration checkpoints at major bridge and tunnel crossings.

The city also is requiring hotels, train, bus and car rental companies, where anyone is booking a stay in New York City, to also fill out a travel form so the test & trace corps can locate and monitor them in quarantine.

People who violate the state’s order will be subject to fines and a mandatory quarantine, with fines at $2,000 for the first violation, $5,000 for the second, and up to $10,000 if they cause harm.

New York city’s mayor said, “We need to make sure that quarantine becomes stronger every day. That the law comes to life more every day.”
