The capital city of China has been hit by a sandstorm that turned the sky a yellowish orange causing unprecedented measurement of pollution in Beijing.
Hundreds of air flights were cancelled or grounded as the sky was covered by an apocalyptic-looking orange haze as the storm caused pollution levels in some districts to be at 160 times the recommended limit.
The thick clouds of dust were pushed from the Gobi Desert into Beijing by heavy winds. And in neighboring Mongolia 340 people are missing and 6 people dead from the storm.
The Beijing weather bureau has called the sandstorm the worst in years as the Chinese capital was covered in thick dust. And Chinese media reported that at least 12 provinces in the country had been affected.
“It looks like the end of the world,” sad one Beijing resident to the Reuters news agency. “In this kind of weather I really, really don’t want to be outside,” she said.
The apocalyptic skies caused an unprecedented spike in air pollution measurements as schools canceled outdoor events and people stayed indoors.
The thick dust clouds shrouded Beijing’s iconic landmarks, including the Forbidden City, and downtown skyscrapers at times disappeared from view, enveloped by clouds of sand.
