There has been a massive increase in the number of police officers killed in the United States as a result of ambush-style attacks — a jump of more than 300% in the first half of 2016, according to a report published by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
The report, which was published at the end of July and covers only the first half of 2016, does not include the two officers who were shot and killed in an apparent ambush in Iowa on Wednesday. Both officers were gunned down in their patrol cars.
The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund is a not-for-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1984 to raise awareness about policing issues and honor officers’ service.
