A massive asteroid named after Apophis, the ‘God of Chaos’, is speeding up as it travels towards Earth with a potential impact date in an explosion that would be equivalent to 880 million tons of TNT.

Experts warn the asteroid is gaining speed and could strike our planet in 48 years according to astronomers.

Prior to this discovery the impact was said to be improbable, but new findings suggest the asteroid has a chance of crashing into Earth on April 12, 2068 – and it could be catastrophic.

Since Apophis is more than 1,000 feet wide and an impact would be equivalent to 880 million tons of TNT exploding all at once.

Apophis was discovered by astronomers on June 19, 2004, and since then the asteroid has been tracked as it orbits the sun. When researchers spotted Apophis again this year they determined it had picked up speed.

This is known as the Yarkovsky effect, where as the asteroid’s body heats up in sunlight, it re-radiates the energy away as heat, which acts as tiny thrusters for the cosmic object.

Astronomers had thought before this effect happened, an impact in 2068 was not probable, but they have since changed their tune.

One of the astronomers, said: “The new observations we obtained with the Subaru telescope earlier this year were good enough to reveal the Yarkovsky acceleration of Apophis, and they show that the asteroid is drifting away from a purely gravitational orbit by about 170 meters per year, which is enough to keep the 2068 impact scenario in play.”

Researchers note that more observations need to be done in order to fully understand the amplitude of the Yarkovksy effect and how it affects Apophis’ orbit and they are underway.
