It’s reported that on Jan. 20, 2019, in Chile that a strong magnitude 6.7 earthquake has hit the coast of north-central Chile the US Geological Survey said.

The earthquake, which hit at 0132 GMT (Sunday), was felt in Valparaiso, O’Higgins and the region of the capital Santiago, as well as in Atacama and Coquimbo up north.

The quake was 53 km below the surface, a relatively shallow tremor that shook homes and had some worried about a possible tsunami, but the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no tsunami threat following the tremor.

The quake was felt strongly in northern Chile where buildings swayed, according to social media and press reports. Witnesses said it also rattled buildings farther south in the capital city of Santiago.

Also, thousands of homes lost power, which showed how intense the quake was, according to Ricardo Toro of the National Emergency Office. Chile’s seismological service had put the strength of the quake at magnitude 6.8.

Chile, located on the so-called “Pacific Ring of Fire,” has a long history of deadly quakes, including a 8.8 magnitude quake in 2010 off the south-central coast, which also triggered a tsunami that devastated coastal towns.

A 1960 Valdivia earthquake in Chile was the strongest ever recorded, at 9.5, on the magnitude scale, according to the USGS.

This earthquake has happened near the beginning of a day when in its night, the event of a Super Blood Moon is set to appear; which the event of a Super Blood Moon has been linked to the occurrence of significant earthquakes.
