Mexico has been struck by a 6.6 magnitude earthquake, causing many buildings in the country’s capital to shake, according to seismological services.
The earthquake hit near the coast of Chiapas, close to the border with Guatemala. The quake was also felt in Mexico city where high-rise buildings shook.
The epicenter of the quake hit at a depth of 42 miles (68 km) near the Pacific coast and Mexico’s border with Guatemala, according to the USGS.
Residents also reported they felt tremors in nearby Guatemela and as far as El Savador. Some locals said they felt moderate shaking while others said they experienced strong shaking in their area.
The temblor caused tall buildings to sway hundreds of miles away in Mexico City, where some people were evacuated from offices along a central boulevard.
But there were no reports of major damage, and there were no immediate reports of injuries. And no tsunami warning has been announced.
