The United States Geological Survey has reported a magnitude 4.7 earthquake occurred this evening off the coast of Maryland.

The earthquake occurred approximately 136 miles off the coast of Maryland with people in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia reporting feeling the effects from the earthquake.

As of about 8:45 p.m. the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had not reported any tsunami activity off the East Coast.

The Town of Ocean City posted on Facebook after the earthquake, saying officials were aware of the situation and that their Emergency Services Department has been in contact with the State and would be monitoring as needed.

The 4.7-magnitude earthquake struck about 136 miles offshore east-southeast of Ocean City, Md. with the U.S. Geological Survey reporting the tremor occurred about six miles deep.

The agency logged over a dozen reports of shaking. Most of them originated from along or close to the Atlantic coast between southeast New York and the North Carolina Outer Banks.

When earthquakes do occur in this region, they can often be felt across wide areas because seismic waves travel easily through the spongy soil along the Atlantic coastal plain.
