A California earthquake has shaken the San Francisco Bay area with a 5.1 magnitude tremor that was immediately followed with an aftershock.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 11:42 a.m. quake struck 12 miles east of San Jose at a depth of about 4 miles. The area is about 40 miles southeast of downtown San Francisco.
The 5.1-M earthquake was quickly followed by a 3.1 aftershock. As they struck the Bay Area seriously rattling the homes and nerves of residents.
In addition to the city of San Francisco, there was shaking also reported from Santa Rosa to the north down to Santa Maria in the south.
The USGS also said that larger aftershocks were possible with one or more aftershocks that are larger than magnitude 5, which can be damaging, within the next week.
They also said there will likely be smaller aftershocks within the next week, with up to 14 magnitude 3 or higher aftershocks.
And that they expect the number of aftershocks will decrease over time, but a large aftershock could temporarily increase the number of aftershocks.
The Bay Area quake caused the BART service to be halted followed by inspections of the system as passengers were advised there would be major delays as crews performed safety procedures. VTA and Caltrain also announced delays to conduct safety inspections of their systems.
One resident affected by the quake took to Twitter posting: “The dog and I are still under the kitchen table. Very strong in San Jose.” And another posted that their home swayed during the quake — “Roller here in San Francisco.”
The San Andreas fault and six other significant fault zones run through the San Francisco Bay Area. An earthquake there in 1989 killed dozens of people, injured more than 3,500 and caused billions in property damage, according to the USGS.
