Call To Ban Muslim Burqa After Reports Sri Lanka Bombers Wore Them

Signs of the Last Days® MinistryNews

Sri Lanka has initiated a plan to ban the Muslim burqa as interrogation of suspects and other evidence are pointing to the involvement of individuals wearing them in the Easter Sunday Islamic terrorist attacks that killed over 300 people and wounded another 500 in the country.

A bill was announced Tuesday on the Facebook page of UNP Parliamentarian Ashu Marasinghe to propose banning the burqa in Sri Lanka, citing national security concerns.

Its reported the bill says that the burqa is not a traditional Muslim garment and claims it has been identified as previously being used by individuals to engage in terrorist activities by hiding their identities.

It was pointed out that burqa and niqab were never part of the traditional attire of Muslim women in Sri Lanka until the Gulf War in the early 1990s which saw extremist elements introducing the garb to Muslim women.

A report said that defense sources said a number of female accomplices of incidents in Dematagoda had also escaped wearing burqas.

If Sri Lanka adopts the burqa ban, it would join the group of nations in Asia, Africa, and Europe that have done so in the interest of preventing Islamic terrorists from using the burqa to evade police or hide explosives.

Among the nations that have enacted a burqa ban are Chad, Cameroon, Gabon, Morocco, Austria, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Belgium, and Xinjiang, a Muslim-majority province in northwestern China.
