With the British Prime Minister Theresa May barely clinging to power, Britain’s Parliament in open rebellion has made a stunning power grab from the PM over the government’s efforts to leave the European Union.

May’s plan for withdrawal from the EU has already been voted down — twice. So frustrated British lawmakers late Monday passed an amendment handing themselves the power to vote on alternatives to her plan.

No doubt, going into the parliament’s decision to do this, is the rising noise from the British public over what they view as the government’s bad handling of the affair.

A petition calling for Prime Minister Theresa May to revoke Article 50 and remain in the European Union has reached nearly 6 million signatures on Tuesday, setting a new record for petitions hosted on the British Parliament website.

May’s government, which responds to all petitions that gain more than 10,000 signatures, issued a flat “no” on Tuesday. “This Government will not revoke Article 50. We will honour the result of the 2016 referendum and work with Parliament to deliver a deal that ensures we leave the European Union,” the statement read.

But Britain’s parliament announced Tuesday that they would debate the people’s petition. The “Stop Brexit” petition is the fastest growing petition on record.
