The Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention are saying more children are getting sick from a rare illness leaving them paralyzed.

The CDC said it’s investigating 252 potential cases of a polio-like disease that paralyzes children. The new number shows an increase of 33 patients in one week.

Parents are now in Washington, D.C., who never thought they’d be walking the halls of Congress, are pushing lawmakers to do something about it.

Katie and JP Bustamante’s son Alex died just 5 months ago. “I literally watched him just melt before my eyes as the day went on,” Katie Bustamante said.

The families are meeting with members of Congress and with officials at the CDC and National Institutes of Health, pushing for better tracking of the illness and more research dollars.

The CDC is forming a research-focused task force and has instructed states to better track patients to help determine the cause of the illness. The CDC said it is increasing its network of neurologists, its disease detectives, to investigate and track cases.

Pestilent disease was described as a sign of the times at the end of this age in the prophecy of Matthew 24. And the world is realizing not only new diseases breaking into societies, but also the recurrence of old diseases making a comeback.
