China and Russia have agreed to jointly build a base on the moon expanding the two countries’ cooperation even into space.

A memorandum of understanding was signed by the two countries’ space administrations. Chinese leader Xi Jinping has called on his country to develop into a “major space power.”

In recent years China has pushed to the front lines of space activities for the first time, while Russia has also been seeking to regain a leading position.

In 2019, China became the first country to land an unmanned spacecraft on the far side of the moon, establishing the country’s arrival as a space power.

Then in 2020 China successfully ferried several pounds of lunar rock and soil back to Earth which was the first moon matter to be brought back in 44 years.

Also, a Chinese space probe is orbiting Mars where it is capturing striking images and is set to land a rover on the surface of the Red Planet this year.

China says that the new planned moon base will be a research station which will be located on the moon’s surface or in lunar orbit.

Additionally, their announcement said the joint lunar station will have capabilities for “long-term autonomous operation.” And it will engage in research activities, including “lunar exploration and utilization.”
