Chinese Communist authorities reportedly raided a children’s Bible class when over 60 officers stormed the class, shutting down a large underground church.

Entry and exit points for the roads leading to the church were cordoned off by police as the raid began.

One church member said that halfway through the children’s Bible class, they heard the footsteps of dozens of police and officials stomping up the stairs.

Once inside, officers read out law enforcement notices declaring the church as an illegal gathering. The officers then recorded the identity of the worshipers, including the children.

After verifying their identities, they warned them to not return to the church before letting them go. The police stayed for many hours confiscating 1000’s of books including all Bibles.

According to a notice issued by the district ethnic and religious affairs bureau, all activities at the church have been suspended by local authorities for violating the Religious Affairs Regulation.

The raids on independent underground churches are part of a broader crackdown of unregistered churches that Beijing has escalated this year, with observers saying it is the worst they have seen in decades.

The campaign has been bolstered by amendments to the Religious Affairs Regulation that gives grass roots officials more power to act against churches and impose tougher penalties for “unauthorised religious gatherings.”
