It’s not over for Asia Bibi, the Pakistani Christian mother falsely accused and imprisoned on death row for blasphemy who has been acquitted by Pakistan’s Supreme Court.

After being in solitary confinement while in prison, now Asia Bibi’s life is in imminent danger upon her release from death row. This is because of the large number of serious death threats against her life and huge riots about her acquittal in Pakistan which is mostly Islamic.

Large violent protests by Islamists broke out as a result of Bibi’s not guilty verdict. In Punjab, where Bibi had previously lived with her family, the provincial government banned any kind of gathering or procession.

Islamabad has been blocked off by protesters shouting slogans and the police are on standby. A perimeter has been formed by law enforcement around sensitive targets and important government buildings.

Demonstrations against the verdict are being held in Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar and Multan. Clashes with police have been reported. The Red Zone in the capital Islamabad, where the Supreme Court is located, has been sealed off by police, and paramilitary forces have been deployed to keep protesters away from the court.

Also, many death threats have been unleashed against her with Islamists demanding Bibi be killed, regardless of the verdict. They also are saying believing Muslims should punish the Supreme Court judges for ruling against Islam even though Bibi was found innocent.

To Pakistan’s Supreme Court’s credit, they quickly upturned a series of legal rulings that had kept Bibi on death row for years, saying “she appears to be a person, in the words of Shakespeare’s King Lear, ‘more sinned against than sinning‘. ”

Obviously Bibi’s life is in danger in Pakistan. Shortly after her original conviction, a prominent politician, Punjab Governor Salman Taseer, was murdered for speaking out in her support and calling for the blasphemy laws to be reformed.

The killer – Mumtaz Qadri – was executed, but became a cult hero with a large shrine dedicated to him on the outskirts of Islamabad.

This all started when Asia Bibi, a Christian, working with a group of Islamic women harvesting fruit on a farm in June 2009, ran into trouble when a row broke out about a bucket of water. The women said that because she had used a cup, they could no longer touch it, as her faith had made it unclean.

Then the women said Asia Bibi should convert to Islam and that she made three offensive comments about the Prophet Muhammad. She was later beaten up at her home, during which her accusers say she confessed to blasphemy. She was then arrested by police.

Now with the Islamic country in an uproar over the order for her release, Bibi’s life is in grave danger and she and her family must leave Pakistan. She has been offered asylum by several countries.

Please pray for her a safe release from prison and then safe passage out of the country. It will be a perilous time for her until she is out of the country. And pray for Christians in Pakistan who are suffering continued persecution.
