A rare, potentially deadly mosquito-transmitted illness called Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) has now been reported in at least three states as it seems to be spreading.

As now there have been four recorded cases in Massachusetts, including one case in which the person died, while there have been three suspected cases in Michigan. And cases involving animals have been reported in Florida.

In an interview with ABC News, Dr. Todd Ellerin, director of Infectious Diseases and vice chair Department of Medicine at South Shore Health in Massachusetts, explained that EEE “is the most deadly of all the mosquito-born viral brain infections, aka encephalitides.”

The Eastern equine encephalitis virus is transmitted by mosquitoes, and can affect humans, horses and fowl as birds, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

EEE can be spread by several species of mosquitoes, including those that make their home along the increasingly warmer areas of the U.S.

Infection with the EEE virus will typically cause a flu-like illness, including chills, fatigue and joint and muscle pains. with these symptoms lasting one to two weeks.

And a small percentage of those infected with the EEE virus will go on to develop a serious group of symptoms called Eastern equine encephalitis.

Where the virus affects the brain with inflammation and can present with fever, headache, drowsiness, vomiting and coma. And these people have the possibility of death from this and if surviving could have permanent neurological damage.

And unfortunately, there is no cure for EEE with no human vaccine for the virus so treatment is only supportive meaning monitoring and adjusting care.

There are efforts now for increased publicity from state public health departments about EEE to help people protect themselves.

And in high-risk areas with marshy environments conducive to mosquitoes, states have initiated aerial mosquito spraying with insecticides. But this spraying will reduce but not eliminate the risks of transmitting the EEE virus.

Orange County, Florida, just released a public advisory warning that the Department of Health there has found signs of the brain-infecting virus.

As they found EEE in a flock of sentinel chickens, which local governments use to monitor and track infectious diseases, according to the warning. And they warn that if the sentinel chickens are getting bit, that means human infections could follow close behind.

In this day with trends of warmer temperatures, it seems mosquito-borne illness will likely spread farther into human-populated areas as our planet is continuing to heat up.
