The death toll connected to the riot at the US Capitol has increased now to 6 after the deaths of members of the US Capitol Police who were at the riot.

In the chaos as rioters clashed with the police at the Capitol, one person was shot and killed during the siege, while three other people also died from medical emergencies but dozens of law enforcement officers were also injured.

Now one officer who is a member of the Capitol Police has died from his injuries suffered while engaging with the rioters.

The U.S. Capitol Police said in a statement that Officer Brian D. Sicknick was injured “while physically engaging with protesters” during the riot. And he is the fifth person to die in connection to the Capitol protest and violence.

During the struggle at the Capitol, Sicknick, 42, was hit in the head with a fire extinguisher, law enforcement officials said. The officials would not discuss the ongoing investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

Additionally, another veteran US Capitol Police officer, Officer Howard Liebengood, has died by suicide, authorities disclosed after he had also responded to the riot.

The Capitol Police did not disclose the circumstances of the officer’s death but sources characterized it as an apparent suicide. It was not immediately clear what drove Liebengood — whose late father once served as sergeant-at-arms for the Senate — to the act.

Liebengood’s death came as the department was still mourning Officer Sicknick, who was pepper-sprayed and fatally bludgeoned with a fire extinguisher when rioters stormed the US Capitol in a failed attempt to prevent the certification of the 2020 election.
