Rescuers in Indonesia are still scrambling to reach trapped victims screaming for help from collapsed buildings after a massive earthquake spawned a tsunami with it now reported the death toll has jumped to more than 800 dead.

People could still be heard calling out from the eight-story Roa-Roa Hotel which toppled as Friday’s twin disasters swept through the hard-hit city of Palu on the island of Sulawesi, said Muhammad Syaugi, the head of Indonesia’s search and rescue agency.

“I can still hear the voices of the survivors screaming for help while inspecting the compound,” he told local online news portal Detik.com, adding there could be 50 people trapped inside.

Disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho told a news conference that the death toll had more than doubled to 832, with nearly all of those killed in Palu. He said there were still not comprehensive reports about casualties in surrounding coastal areas.

“The death is believed to be still increasing since many bodies were still under the wreckage, while many have not been reached,” he said.

It was previously reported how that a powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake rocked Indonesia hitting the capital of Palu in central Sulawesi province and triggering a nearly 20-foot tsunami. Officials say that it swept away houses, businesses, and mosques, killing at least hundreds in the area.

An Indonesian TV showed a smartphone video which has hit the internet showing a powerful tsunami wave hitting Palu as people screamed and ran in fear with the water smashing into and destroying buildings.

The region was was first rocked by the magnitude 7.5 earthquake and then numerous strong aftershocks hit including one of magnitude 6.7.

Dwikorita Karnawati, who heads Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency, BMKG, told the Reuters news agency the tsunami had “receded” but not before causing major damage. “The situation is chaotic, people are running on the streets and buildings collapsed,” Karnawati told Reuters. “There is a ship washed ashore.”

In December 2004, a massive magnitude 9.1 earthquake off Sumatra in western Indonesia triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.
