According to groundbreaking new research to better understand the region’s seismology, scientists have discovered that a detectable earthquake, on average, occurs every 3 minutes in Southern California now.

“We see incredible details,” Caltech seismologist Zachary Ross said of the newly discovered earthquakes he outlined in a study released Thursday in the journal Science, of which he was the lead author.

The report’s summary describes that they developed and applied a detection technique to the entire waveform archive of the regional seismic network in southern California.

Which provides important new insights into the geometry of fault zones at depth, fore-shock behavior and nucleation processes, and earthquake triggering mechanisms.

The extraordinary detail resulted in a catalog with 1.81 million earthquakes, a factor of 10 increase.

This means California has experienced 10 times more earthquakes than previously known, according to the groundbreaking new research that is helping scientists better understand the region’s seismology.

The discovery of these micro-earthquakes in Southern California shows that a detectable earthquake, on average, occurs every 3 minutes in Southern California — much more frequent than the old estimate.

It’s reported that researchers could now have a better ability to identify undiscovered faults, detect patterns of moving earthquake swarms, and identify faint clusters of fore-shocks that occur before a larger earthquake.
