Doctors had to suspend their work in the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak and flee after two of its facilities were torched with fire in two separate attacks on the treatment centers there.
“When I send my teams I need to be sure that they are going to come back alive,” says Emmanuel Massart, the on-the-ground emergency coordinator for Doctors Without Borders in the region. “The attacks were really, really violent.”
Massart arrived on the scene soon after and says everyone was traumatized. His colleagues told him, “You are afraid for your life. You feel completely helpless.”
So the aid group Doctors without Borders is suspending its work in the epicenter of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
These latest attacks come in the wake of the country’s 10th Ebola outbreak, raising fears that this will cause a setback to the efforts to halt the spread of the deadly virus.
At the time of the attacks, patients at the center who were suspected or confirmed to have Ebola just picked up and ran if possible.
The Health Ministry said people being treated for suspected cases of Ebola fled the area during the attacks and the search for the patients with confirmed cases of Ebola, who are highly infectious, is currently underway.
Officials of the World Health Organization said several patients are still at large.
The Ebola outbreak declared in August is the second-largest when it comes to cases and deaths in West Africa, just behind the 2014-2016 outbreak that killed more than 11,300 people.
Since the outbreak in Congo, there have been 879 cases, of which 814 are confirmed, along with 488 confirmed Ebola deaths.
In an update, the World Health Organization said there was a “high proportion” of people with Ebola dying in the community. The statement indicated people infected with Ebola are avoiding treatment and clinics.
The Biblical prophecies (Matthew 24, Revelation 6) foretell that pestilences bringing death would be a sign of the Last Days signaling we are nearing the end of this age and the coming appearance of Jesus Christ to catch away His born again believers.
