A powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck Croatia and sent shockwaves through Europe killing at least six and wiping out buildings in the strongest quake in Croatia in 140 years.

“This is the largest earthquake to occur in Croatia since the advent of modern seismic instrumentation,” according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake hit Petrinja the hardest, a central Croatian town with a population of around 24,000, where buildings collapsed and debris filled the streets with people trapped under the rubble.

“My town has been completely destroyed. We have dead children,” Petrinja Mayor Darinko Dumbović said. “This is like Hiroshima — half of the city no longer exists.”

A nuclear power plant in neighboring Slovenia was automatically shut down due to the earthquake. The temblor was also felt in Rome and as far away as Austria’s capital, Vienna.

The disaster adds to an already disastrous year for Croatia, which is already repairing 20,000 buildings from a March earthquake, while also tackling one of Europe’s worst surges in coronavirus cases and a record economic recession.

Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said at the scene that most buildings in Petrinja were damaged so badly they’re now unusable.

Plenkovic also said in comments on N1 Television that, “2020 has brought us tragedy after tragedy.”
