Its reported that a 3.7 magnitude earthquake has hit in Mississippi this afternoon. The earthquake was reported to be near the town of Hollandale, Mississippi today.

In early reports, shaking was said to be felt throughout Washington County.

The area is reported to have had seismic activity before, such as with the Madison County earthquake in 2014 being the most recent, even though there are said not to be any major faults in this specific area.

Homes were also reported to have been shaken in the town of Greenville.

But this earthquake location is in the Mississippi River Valley and not that far from the New Madrid Seismic Zone in the central Mississippi River Valley which has seen major earthquakes before.

200 years ago there were several massive earthquakes with some going over 7.0 magnitude that happened in this zone in mid-America that were felt more than 1,000 miles away.
