There was an earthquake this weekend in the San Andreas fault, the longest and most dangerous fault in California.

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake hit near Gilroy on Saturday night but was felt across the Bay Area. The quake was centered in Aromas, Calif., 47 miles south of San Jose and hit at 8:01 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The USGS says the quake had a depth of 7.9 km. And people from Santa Cruz to San Francisco said they felt the shake. Meteorologist Drew Tuma said the earthquake was likely on the San Andreas fault, which is why it was felt so far.

He said: “Likely the reason we felt this earthquake in San Francisco even though we are 70+ miles away from the epicenter is because it looked to occur on the San Andreas Fault. Which then rippled north into the City.”

The San Andreas fault, which has had epic disaster movies made about it, is described as one of the most dangerous in California.

And is said to be capable of unleashing a magnitude 8.2 earthquake along the length of the state from close to the Mexican border through Palm Springs, San Bernardino and into the mountains of Los Angeles County, all the way up to near San Francisco.

There have been recent earthquakes in California that some say have raised the risk of “the big one” hitting California, with them making the San Andreas fault three times more likely to rupture.

Now there was this magnitude 4.2 earthquake that is said to have been felt way out across the Bay Area shaking San Francisco.

With the reason given is that the epicenter of the earthquake looked to have occurred on the San Andreas Fault, which then caused the tremor to ripple north up to the city.

Was this earthquake a precursor or a foreshock of a bigger one coming in the San Andreas?

The 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck not long ago at Ridgecrest in Southern California was preceded by several foreshocks that led up to the big quake.

And the San Andreas Fault is a region beneath California which is of particular concern to seismologists, as they say it is long overdue a huge shake with it ripe for a large earthquake.

As California sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire with the major San Andreas fault running almost the entire length of the state along the Pacific Ocean.
